Who we are

About Us

Bengalla is an open cut mine, using a dragline, truck and excavator method. After being washed and prepared for sale, the coal is loaded onto trains for transportation 130km to the port of Newcastle where it is shipped to international customers.

Bengalla Mining Company is a joint venture ownership with Wesfarmers holding 40%, New Hope Group 40%, Mitsui 10% and Taipower 10%.

We currently have 420 permanent employees and 229 category 1 contractors. In addition to this the operation uses approximately 150 category 3 contracts, with the majority of our workforce living in the Muswellbrook, Upper Hunter and Singleton Shires.

Bengalla received an initial 21 year development consent in 1996. The consent was renewed in March 2015 and extends mining through to 2039. The extraction limit approved from the mine is 15 Million tonnes per annum of run of mine coal.

Our business operates 24 hours, seven days a week.
